Cowardice as a concept is a trait defined by a lack of courage when facing difficult or challenging situations. It manifests in behaviors like avoiding responsibility, or refusing to take risks for personal growth. Cowardice in itself is a very subjective topic and doesn’t just mean “fear”. The definition of a coward is not always clear, due to very perspectives and beliefs. To elaborate, someone who may be considered a coward may prioritize comfort over confronting uncertainty, life in real life scenarios, where individuals may avoid difficult conversations to maintain peace, or fail to stand up against injustice. Another factor that I think makes someone a coward is blaming others or making excuses to avoid facing consequences, as well as refusing to admit mistakes out of fear of appearing weak. These are some situations that may make someone a coward, however, to label a person such a term depends on context, where whatever course of action is the reasonable response. Culture also plays a huge role where some things may be viewed as obligatory for a person, like masculine strength. Such topics of course vary by upbringing and background.
In my life, there were certain moments where I should’ve stepped up through whatever obstacles were holding me back, because of anxiety or self doubt, however nowadays, I yearn to take any opportunity that hits me, regardless of the challenges that may come up. You only live life once, and even though some things come and go, other opportunities may not. It is working against adversity and obstacles that unlock a person’s self growth through self-discovery in such unknown situations. Fear in itself is a natural response to every person on this planet, and it comes down to how a person responds to it, and how they overcome it. Any concept with variability like cowardice is difficult to define in a sentence, but possible to understand when we experience such things first hand. We look and realize our shortcomings, generating a definition of our own in our minds. We all have our standards.
In “The Glass Roses”, the theme of cowardice is intricately woven into the narrative, particularly through the character of Stephen, who grapples with societal expectations of masculinity and his own personal characteristics. Stephen is pressured to conform to traditional masculinity, influenced by the notions exemplified by his father and the other lumberjacks. This pressure is driven by fear; fear of being the odd one out, and fear of being labeled weak. As the story progresses, Stephen begins to veer away from this influence, especially through his friendship with Leka, who is already ostracized by the other men. As he and Leka become close companions, Stephen realizes that there is more to masculinity than just strength, and that him being perceived as a coward is inauthentic. With his interactions with Leka, Stephen realizes that there is true strength on an emotional level, which is thought to be cowardice by his father. This is seen in how Leka’s apologies to Stephen catches him off guard, as this is unfamiliar to the ideas influenced by his father. They both resonate with each other on an emotional level, tackling these obstacles. In his scenario, he is in fact the opposite of a coward for embracing this regardless of external pressure from societal norms. Stephen demonstrates true courage, even if it means facing uncertainty and potential backlash.

Dear Aayan,
Your response to “The Glass Roses” was very detailed and well-developed. It demonstrates a masculine society where courage is seen as two differing viewpoints. One may view courage as masculinity, defined by the lack of emotions. On the other hand, one may view courage as understanding their own emotions and being in touch with their well-being. This demonstrates Stephan’s courage to accept who he is and strive for his understanding of courage if it means misaligning himself with his father’s idea of masculinity. “Culture also plays a huge role where some things may be viewed as obligatory for a person, like masculine strength. Such topics of course vary by upbringing and background.” This passage unites your paragraphs as it provides depth to your writing. It provides unique background information that readers should consider as each perspective is shaped by environmental factors, such as how one is raised, or the interactions an individual makes. Societal norms are often a factor when it comes to shaping one’s viewpoint or perspectives on a specific topic.
To improve upon your writing, I would suggest adding more information on how individuals in society have faced the conflict of their understandings of masculinity versus society’s expectations of a man. Providing this example will further support your ideas and fully unite your writing together.
After reading your blog, I was impressed with the detailed analysis that you made with this short story. As you explored the topic as it relates to society, the story, and your life, you exemplified the importance of having the courage to act and not letting society dictate one’s actions. Your response provided further evidence that is significant to the main theme of your blog, as it makes me, as well as your readers, connect it with life. The themes of courage in one’s life play a profound impact on who we are and set out to be.
Sincerely,
Eldin
